The Sinking of Lisbon Maru poster

What happens when a scientist goes looking for a ship and finds a forgotten piece of history instead?

BACCS Cinema recently hosted Director Fang Li for a powerful screening of The Sinking of Lisbon Maru. For two hours, the Bay Area audience sat spellbound by a WWII tragedy buried since 1942, the sinking of a ship carrying 1,800+ British POWs.

Fang Li’s journey is incredible: it took eight years and advanced geophysics to locate the wreck, but he soon realized that “finding the ship” wasn’t enough. He needed to find the people. The film shifts from technical exploration to a deeply human investigation, tracing survivors and families across the UK, US, Japan, and China.

This event was more than just a movie screening; it was a conversation about closure and humanity. Given the buzz, we have decided to stream it live on YouTube, and added an additional screening QA event with the host Joan Chen next week.
